The kitchen is about to get a huge augmented reality upgrade. Apple's new spatial computing headset, the Vision Pro, allows us to overlay digital visuals onto the real world in a profound way.

Nothing new there agreed but Apple being Apple, they have gone "all-in" on making this arguably the best headset outside of the vastly more expensive enterprise Varjo offerings.

I believe the culinary world is poised for some truly immersive and intelligent enhancements.

If you pardon the pun, here's a little (very funny) taster.

Augmented Recipe Videos

One of the most obvious applications is cookbook-style recipe videos that can float in mid-air as you prep your meal. Simply pull up a recipe and have the step-by-step instructions playing right alongside your cutting board and stove. With Vision Pro's outward facing cameras, the video could even recognise your ingredients and kitchen tools for contextualised visuals.

Connect up your smart Internet of things refrigerator, and you can also see what ingredients you have, what needs using up quickly to combat food waste, and send a reminder to the headset when your ready to shop.

Too much information? Probably, when all you want is a Tuna Mayo Melt 😃

The Vision Pro could inform you on suitable substitutions or complementary items to add more flavour. And it could track what you're tossing into the bowl or pot, calculating nutritional data like calories, fats and macros on the fly.

Expanded Views and AI Assistance

But the spatial computing possibilities extend far beyond simple videos. Need to chop an onion? The Vision Pro could overlay a enlarged 3D view directly on your work surface, slicing through the layers to reveal expert knife skills.

Al cooking assistants could manifest as virtual avatar characters to guide you through recipes, suggest wine pairings, or provide tips on proper cutting techniques. Objects and surfaces could be identified and labeled for easy inventory of pantry staples.

And with a platform as powerful as Vision Pro, you could foresee the blending of visual food recognition, vast recipe databases, and generative AI creating wildly inventive culinary ideas on the spot. Stumped on what to cook for dinner? Just scan your fridge and get computer-generated suggestions based on what's on hand.

With the much anticipated and upgraded "Siri" coming down the line, and personal on device LLMs, your AI personal assistant will help you with everything just by using your voice.

If it could just get the BBQ lit, the would be great!

Immersive Classes and Social Cooking

Looking to up your cooking game? Then literally turn it into a multiplayer game with some friendly competition, Spatial "Bake Off" anyone? Imagine pulling your chef instructor's class into your physical cooking space, with their hands and tools appearing as 3D visuals right on your countertop to follow along.

Or invite friends or family into your kitchen virtually. They could pull up a video window off to the side, seeing your view while conversing naturally as you cook together remotely. Once Apple has improved the spatial audio, you could even replicate the sounds of a kitchen.

But not all of them 🤬😃

As Apple works to build out the app ecosystem for Vision Pro, expect foodie innovators to push boundaries on how augmented reality can enhance cooking skills, social connectivity and imaginative cuisine.

The kitchen may soon become one of the most convincing use cases for spatial computing.

Who knows, it could just be a recipe for success! (sorry, again!).
